At Sedgefield Primary School we aim to offer a high quality Geography curriculum which inspires in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world, engaging pupils in outdoor learning and geographical enquiry. By the end of Y6, we intend our pupils to be ready for the KS3 Geography curriculum. Throughout KS1 and KS2 map and fieldwork knowledge is developed through a series of field based enquiries. Pupils develop their knowledge of the location of significant places, including within their local area. Teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the framework and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time. Pupils will learn to collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through fieldwork experiences and geographical sources, including maps, diagrams, globes, atlases, aerial photographs and digital/computer mapping.

Geography is taught throughout the school in termly topics. The curriculum has been sequenced to enable pupils to gradually widen their sense of scale from their immediate geography to the global. This is organised and shared in the long term overview. The teaching of this subject is discrete in order to develop the pupils’ disciplinary knowledge. This is enhanced through fieldwork based enquiries in Key Stages One and Two, including those in the local area. The school also has a subscription to Digimaps to enhance teaching and learning. This provides a range of geographical sources including aerial photographs and ordnance survey maps (recent and historic) and aims to develop pupils’ disciplinary knowledge of digital mapping.
