Our Music Subject Leader is Mr S Eltringham

Our Music Governors is Mrs C Richardson

At Sedgefield Primary all pupils gain a secure understanding of music through singing, playing, listening, composing and evaluating through the different musical genres. Children learn about many forms of music and the key components that create musicians. Music plays an integral part of all people’s lives across the globe as well as being relevant through the stages of history and it is our objective that the children of Sedgefield Primary can recognise and appreciate these concepts, especially as we focus on the cultures that make up modern day Britain.

The National Curriculum ensures that children sing, perform, listen and evaluate. This is embedded in classroom activities as well as weekly singing assemblies, performances and the learning of musical instruments through our links with the Durham Music Service and the school choir.

The long-term plan for Sedgefield Primary follows the guidelines given by Durham Music Service, this allows for the children to use musical vocabulary to dissect it, and understand how it is made, played, appreciated and analysed. In the classroom students learn how to play an instrument, from all four main instrument groups of wind, strings, percussion and keyboards using computing programmes. In doing so the children can understand the different principle of each method of creating notes, as well as how to read basic music notation. They also learn how to compose focussing on different dimensions of music, which in turn feeds their understanding when listening, playing, or analysing music. Composing or performing using body percussion and vocal sounds is also part of the curriculum, which develops the understanding of musical elements without the added complexity of an instrument.

In Year 4 the children are introduced to a brass instrument in a 10 week block of lessons taught by a teacher from Durham Music Service. Every year we have a high intake of pupils wishing to continue these music lessons, not just throughout their time at Sedgefield Primary but after when attending the local secondary school. Throughout the year every class performs in a class assembly. We have brass assemblies, Christmas performances, choir performances and a Year 6 Leaver’s Production.  All these demonstrate the high standards and love for all genres of music that the staff and children have at Sedgefield Primary.
