Religious Education (RE)

Our RE Subject Leader is Mrs R Burlison

Our RE Governor is Mr J Lowes

We aim for our RE curriculum to engage, inspire, challenge and encourage pupils. This will equip them with the knowledge and skills to answer challenging questions, explore different religious beliefs, values and traditions. As Sedgefield is limited in diversity, we feel it is essential for the pupils to develop understanding of the numerous religious traditions, beliefs and practices that are followed in our multi-cultural society. We want them to develop respect, tolerance and understanding of others.
In order to meet our statutory duty to teach Religious Education, at Sedgefield Primary School we use the Durham County Council RE Syllabus to underpin our
teaching and learning of RE. RE is taught weekly following our long and medium-term planning. The lessons are planned to link with key dates and religious festivals. Work is recorded in RE books and can be evidenced with a variety of outcomes, for example written pieces, artwork and photos. In Nursery and Reception, we observe celebrations as they arise throughout the year, e.g. Diwali, Christmas, Chinese New Year and explore the beliefs and practices within each one. In addition, we reflect on what is special and important to us. We also follow the children’s interests and link to their experiences. In Years 1 to 6 we investigate the six main faiths: Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Islam; in particular the symbols and artefacts, inspirational people, prayer, worship and stories associated with each one. The children take part in visits to local churches, as well as visiting other places of worship. Regular assemblies and celebrations help children to gain a greater understanding and celebrate the diversity of the wider world, as do a range of visitors. As the children progress through KS2 they begin to compare viewpoints and
traditions from different faiths. They are encouraged to question, enquire and express their opinion, whilst valuing the opinion of others. R.E. offers our children the means by which to understand how other people choose to live and to understand why they choose to live in that way. As such, R.E. is invaluable in an ever changing and shrinking world.
As pupils leave in Year 6 we aim for them to:

  • have developed spiritually, academically, emotionally and morally to enable them to better understand themselves and others.
  • demonstrate a positive attitude towards people of any religion and show an understanding of cultural beliefs different to their own.
  • demonstrate respectful behaviour to all which transferable outside of school in the wider community and beyond.
  • have an understanding of themselves and others which enables them to cope with the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities of living in a rapidly changing, multicultural world.
